Many screen savers wreck havoc on Windows by way of hidden bundled applications, viruses, untested programming, and bloated resource demands.
These are a few that are simple but safe (and free). They are relatively unsophisticated but take up little space, can be moved as a single .zip file to your windows/system directory with no setup, and do not add junk to your program manager or registry (which makes them easy to remove as well). These were all freeware or shareware, so as far as I know, so long as I receive no compensation or make any creative claim, these can be freely distributed in their unregistered version to whoever would like to use them (so long as they receive no compensation). If the authors of these works feel otherwise please e-mail me and I will remove yours at once. enjoy!
(NOTE: These use runtime files that are shared by other standard windows programs and should already be in your system directory. If for some reason you're missing one just click HERE ).

The following screen savers are larger, more complex and require setup but are well worth the effort and disc space. Some are self-extracting and some need to be un-zipped before running the setup program :

These 3 savers include the CD/Spectrum Pro media player that I opted not to install in the initial set up program. I already have more than enough players and I really didn't get much out of the sound synchronization feature. Visually, however these are the best I've ever seen :

  • KINEMORPHIC SCREEN SAVER
  • PSYCHEDELIC SCREEN SAVER
  • HYPNOGENIC SCREEN SAVER

This is version 2 updated November 2001:

  • MINOR NOTES SCREEN SAVER

The best fireworks screensaver I've seen yet. Highly configurable with great camera angles :

  • SKYROCKET

This one creates layers of simple and not-so-simple patterns using a variety of art styles. What I like about it is it never does the same thing twice. Also note that this is a 14-day trial program, but it has never quit working although it does remind you to register :

  • SERALINE SCREEN SAVER

This aquarium program is set up so you get tank accessories from points obtained by using your printer. However it would take most people years to get enough points, so after you download this screen saver you may also want the little 17K cheat I included also :

  • MOPY FISH
  • FREE MOPY POINTS

Although this saver has been around for a very long time (I used to run it on Windows 3.1), it's still one of my all-time favorites. It goes through a random sequence of redundant events with a surprise every five minutes or so. And yes, the story DOES have an ending :

  • JOHNNY CASTAWAY

I finally found a decent screen saver manager. This one is low fat, easy to use, and totally free. It's also the only one I've found that rotates your screen savers sequentially or at random. Highly recommended :

  • SS CHANGER.ZIP (170KB)
